El Lissitzky's "Sentry" is the formidable third poster in the iconic Victory Over the Sun series. This large-format 62x91cm lithograph poster is a powerful example of Soviet Constructivism and Russian Avant-Garde history.

Lissitzky depicts mechanical figures through bold colours and striking geometric shapes. This series of prints responds to a 1913 futurist opera titled Victory Over the Sun. In it, the protagonists seek to destroy time by capturing the sun. The opera featured radically experimental music and scenes spoken in 'zaum,' an invented futurist language. Lissitzky saw a production in 1920 and was inspired to invent his own designs for the characters and stage setting. Conceived as mechanical puppets or 'automatons' rather than actors, the forms retain a distorted sense of human anatomy.

The Sentry (No. 3) is one of the most structurally complex figures, symbolizing vigilance or defense within the opera's radical, time-destroying narrative. It showcases Lissitzky's mastery of the Proun aesthetic applied to human-like forms.
