El Lissitzky's "Globetrotter (in Time)" is the climactic fifth and final poster in the magnificent Victory Over the Sun series. This large-format 62x91cm lithograph poster represents the ultimate expression of Soviet Constructivism's revolutionary vision of space, time, and form, perfect for the Russian Avant-Garde collector.
Lissitzky depicts mechanical figures through bold colours and striking geometric shapes. This series of prints responds to a 1913 futurist opera titled Victory Over the Sun. In it, the protagonists seek to destroy time by capturing the sun. The opera featured radically experimental music and scenes spoken in 'zaum,' an invented futurist language. Lissitzky saw a production in 1920 and was inspired to invent his own designs for the characters and stage setting. Conceived as mechanical puppets or 'automatons' rather than actors, the forms retain a distorted sense of human anatomy.
Globetrotter (in Time) (No. 5) encapsulates the opera's core objective: the mastery of time itself. As the finale piece, it is one of Lissitzky's most complex and dynamic geometric compositions, utilizing his pioneering Proun aesthetic to visualize movement through an abstract, mechanized universe.
